Control Systems Engineer


About the role

The Control Systems Engineer administers and configures real time SCADA systems to support the operation of Canterbury’s electricity distribution network.  

This role has a focus on the Load Management Systems which reduce non-essential load at times of peak demand from our customers, or times of constrained capacity from the national grid.  Over time your focus will expand to other aspects of the role such as systems configuration and maintenance for Distribution Management, Remote Terminal Units, and Communications services as part of the wider Control Systems team environment.

The Control Systems team actively consults and collaborates with key stakeholders across Orion and engages with many suppliers to ensure optimal service delivery.  In this role, you will provide exceptional customer service and champion continuous improvement in an environment that promotes and values accuracy, safety, innovation and smart solutions.

You possess excellent communication skills and your solutions based approach will see you delivering outcomes and building relationships with customers and colleagues effortlessly.  You operate with integrity in everything you do and will naturally identify with our company values, “Connect, Create, Collaborate”.  Your ability to translate business requirements into real system enhancements, while working with the constraints of accurately configuring and documenting critical systems demanding 24 x 7 availability, is a core skill for success in this role.  

In addition you will have a relevant tertiary qualification and experience working with:

  • SCADA control equipment (eg. Schneider Foxboro IASCADA, GE PowerOn, GE iFix)

  • Substation control equipment (eg Foxboro SCD series)

  • Networks and SCADA network protocols (eg DNP3 over radio and WAN/LAN IP networks).
